Köprülü Canyon Rafting: Honest What-to-Expect Guide
Is Köprülü Canyon rafting really adventurous or just a floaty family trip? Here's an honest breakdown: rapid grades, what you actually wear, safety, food, and whether kids can join. ## What Köprülü Canyon actually is Köprülü is a 14 km stretch of the Köprüçay river cutting through pine-covered limestone gorges 100 km north-east of Antalya. It is one of Turkey's protected national parks and the only place in the region where commercial rafting runs from March to November. The river drops through **grade II+ rapids** — meaning you'll get splashed, occasionally you'll paddle hard, but no one gets flipped out under normal conditions. This is a family-friendly adventure, not white-knuckle grade IV expedition rafting. ## Who can (and should) go Minimum age is 7. Kids as young as 5 can sometimes join in the calm 'rafting fun' section — check when booking. Weight limit 130 kg. You do NOT need to be a swimmer: a Coast Guard-approved life vest is mandatory and your guide sits at the back giving commands. You should NOT go if: you're more than 26 weeks pregnant, you've had recent shoulder/back surgery, or you're afraid of cold water (the river is 12–15 °C even in August because it's spring-fed). ## A realistic hour-by-hour breakdown 07:30 — hotel pickup from Antalya / Lara / Belek. 09:30 — arrive at the base camp, sign the waiver, get issued a wetsuit shorty, helmet, life vest and paddle. 10:15 — safety briefing in your language (English, German, Russian and Turkish standard). 10:45 — put in at Beşkonak bridge, first 15 minutes are flat water to practise commands. 11:15–13:15 — the main run: about 12 named rapids, three swim stops in calm pools, one 3-metre optional cliff jump. 13:30 — take out, hot showers, changing rooms. 14:15 — lunch: grilled chicken or trout, rice, salad, bread, water. Vegetarian on request. 15:30 — start return. Home by 18:00–18:30. ## What to wear and bring Wear swimsuit under a t-shirt and shorts. Bring a towel, a full change of clothes, and old sneakers or river sandals with straps (flip-flops disappear in the first rapid). Leave everything else on the bus — lockers exist but they're small. ## Photos and video The operator has fixed GoPros at three points on the river and photographers on rocks at the biggest rapid. You can review and buy the package (15–25 €) at lunch. Your own phone must be in a waterproof pouch on a lanyard around your neck. ## Combine it with Tazı Canyon for a bigger day If you're staying longer than a week, the **rafting + Tazı Canyon jeep safari** combo runs the same route: raft in the morning, jeep and zipline in the afternoon at the 'Grand Canyon of Turkey' viewpoint. It's a long day (12 hours) but you see two of Antalya's wildest landscapes for barely more than a single tour. > **Book Köprülü Canyon rafting** — [/tours/koprulu-canyon-rafting](/tours/koprulu-canyon-rafting) **Related reads & tours:** [Tazı Canyon jeep safari](/tours/tazi-canyon-jeep-safari)
